Geniuses at Work
Two geniuses, Piero MASI and Steven SPURRIER come together to create iconic blends of wines. They conceptualized this idea together, right here in India, at the Fratelli estate owned vineyards in Akluj, Maharashtra.
Knowing and believing in the quality of the wines produced at Fratelli, Steven, with his immense passion for wines, and Piero with his expertise in wine making, thought it would be an interesting project to work together and develop some blends never been produced in India.
Fratelli‟s Chief wine maker and Oenologist, Piero Masi is justifiably renowned in Tuscany and more specifically the Chianti region, credited with production of some fabulous wines that are acclaimed by connoisseurs wherever wine is enjoyed. Born in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa, Florence (Chianti area), he graduated in Agronomics from the University of Florence in 1971. Since 1974, Piero has worked for many wineries and managed numerous vineyards. The creator of "Chianti Classico Casa Sola‟, so refined is his art of winemaking that Piero‟s wine brand "Cevolis‟ of 2004 and 2006 were sold out even before bottling. With experience of more than 40 years and 58 harvests, Piero‟s Italian heritage and his love for wines is reflected in his commitment towards wine making with his signature blend SETTE being touted as the Opus One of India.
A man who needs no introduction, Decanter magazine‟s consultant editor Steven Spurrier joined the wine trade in London in 1964 and later moved to Paris where he bought a wine shop in 1971, and then opened L‟Academie du Vin, France‟s first private wine school in 1973. Spurrier staged the historic 1976 blind tasting between wines from California and France, the Judgment of Paris, and in the 1980s he wrote several wine books and created the Christie‟s Wine Course with then senior wine director Michael Broadbent, a veteran Decanter columnist. In 1988, Spurrier returned to the UK to focus on writing and consultancy, with his clients including Singapore Airlines. He has won several awards, including Le Personalité de l‟Année (oenology) 1988 for services to French wine and the Maestro Award in honour of California wine legend André Tchelistcheff (2011) and is president of the Circle of Wine Writers as well.
